SPIRITUALS, OPERA A LA CARTE & THE CONCERTO
AACMSO performs nostalgic highlights from Porgy & Bess with internationally acclaimed vocalists: Michael Wright as Sportin' Life; Crystal White as Bess and Wayne Shepperd from LA Opera as Porgy! Other Operatic arias and duets from Carmen & Don Giovanni will be performed.   Pianist & AACMSO Founder & Conductor, Janise White will play "The Glory Hallelujah Jazz Variations Piano Concerto" as a tribute to  Howlett Smith, composer of "Little Altar Boy" and pianist for the TV Series "General Hospital" and "All My Children." The 16 variations range in stylings from the Baroque fugue to Gershwin. Maia, harpist will be featured playing Negro Spirituals, "Little David Play On Your Harp" by Dett and "Deep River" by Burleigh accompanying Wayne Shepperd & Crystal White. The program will open with a Thanksgiving Prayer "Lord We Thank You" by Barbara Sherrill of Atlanta sung by the AACMSO Choir.

Since 1989, AACMSO has been committed to the preservation of works by Black Symphonists and fulfills this mission by reviving historic works from manuscripts into orchestral scores for live concerts.

This concert serves as a microcosm of AACMSO's efforts in preserving the works of Burleigh, Dett and Sherrill with fresh arrangements created for the Black Symphonist Concert series and to perpetuate the legacy of the late composer & Pulitzer Prize Winner, Dr. George Walker of Rutgers University.

Concerts are supported in part by Grants from the Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles & The Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas, Second District; Board Members & Friends of AACMSO.
